  • Carlsbad Desalination Project
MEET at the plant by 9:15 AM - TOUR BEGINS AT 9:30 - 11:00 AM PLEASE MAKE ALLOWANCE FOR TRAFFIC TRAVEL TIME. The plant requires that you be able to walk a mile, there are some stairs, must wear closed-toe, low-heel, walking shoes, wear long pants, and photo ID may be needed. This is the largest, most technically advanced environmentally sound desalination plant in the western hemisphere. You will observe the turning of more than 50 million gallons of fresh, desalinated drinking water per day to people in San Diego County. The plant uses 100 million gallons of seawater from the Pacific Ocean to begin the desalination process. It not only removes the salt but other minerals to produce extremely high-quality water. We will be able to sample this water supply right from the source.
